Welcome to our new families: Brenda and Brian (Brandon), Eric (Clare) and Amanda and Steve (Nolan). I hope you’ve learned enough to warrant your return next month. Gradually, we build the bonds of friendship to handle the transition to Type 1 in our children and families.
Amy Zirk, CPNP, CNS at American Family Children’s Hospital (AFCH), covered the sick day guidelines and encouraged parents to call the doctor/on call doctor for questions and quidance. Discussion also included checking for keytones, ketoacidosis symptons and care, Zofran for vomiting, and special use of the glucagon (with syringe) to pull out of a low and avoid the emergency room. Amy also touched on creation of a binder for new staff and consistent care among patients, as well as a college seminar for teens continuing their education. Ashley Ludwig, RN at AFCH, attended and provided input on questions and discussion, too. We packed a full house and hope attendees will take the next step to contact each other for continual discussions, play dates, etc.
Thanks to our many sitters who handled a dozen or more kids so parents could attend and relax during the meeting. If you’re aware of other teens who are seeking community volunteer time, please contact me for addition to our sitter list.
