As we close out the old year and start the new, we’re taking a moment to celebrate those brave, innovative, gutsy individuals who have worked hard to improve the lives of people with diabetes. If you don’t know them all, you should!

Read what they have accomplished for the diabetes community and vote for the person or organization that you think should receive the top honor. The nominee with the most votes will be feature on dLife TV!

JDRF Network Meeting Notes ~ 10/26/10

Welcome to Karla and Abby from Madison! Feel free to use a couple great resources through the www.jdrf.org website: the Online Diabetes Support Team for one-on-one questions and answers through email, and Juvenation, an online social network for information sharing.

Michelle Alswager showed her Triabetes documentary about 12 Type 1 diabetics who participated in the Ironman Wisconsin Triathlon (in Madison in 2008). Today that number has increased to 1,000 Type 1 diabetics from across the world who participate in triathlons. What an inspiring video of the strength and courage it took for this team who bonded to meet their goals together, while mentoring and crossing the finish line with younger Type 1 athletes! And a special thanks to Michelle for spending the evening with us and for all she continues to do to advocate for Type 1 diabetics everywhere!

A BIG thanks to Samantha Alswager and Joey Alswager for being on deck for child care, so the teens could view the triabetes documentary along with their parents! Hopefully, we’ll have another triabetes documentary showing soon for teens and the college-age set.

Mark your calendar for our last meeting of the year, Nov. 23. Kelly Ruhland from Eli Lilly (insulin, glucagons, etc.) will be our guest speaker.

JDRF Networking Group Meeting – Tonight!

Michelle Alswager will show the documentary, Triabetes, about 12 people with type 1 diabetes, of all different skill levels, who take on the Ironman Wisconsin Triathlon. The documentary is truly inspirational for families and young athletes, and details what it took them to cross the finish line and beyond. Michelle is a strong leader fighting for the cure to diabetes, while influencing and mentoring so many other families nationwide. Come and be inspired by someone who has ideas, vision, courage and energy to follow through to completion any thing she puts her mind to. Babysitters will be provided. Tragic News in our Community

It is with a great sadness that we share that Jesse Alswager passed away unexpectedly this week from complication of type 1 diabetes. Jesse was the son of Michelle Page-Alswager and Tom Alswager. Michelle was the former Executive Director of the JDRF Western Wisconsin Chapter.

A memorial web site for Jesse has been set-up at http://www.caringbridge.org/visit/jessealswager. There you will be able to read “Jesse’s Story,” leave a guestbook message for the family, and make a memorial donation.

Visitation for the family will be held Monday, February 8 from 3:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church (5701 Raymond Rd., Madison). A service for Jesse will follow at 7:30 p.m. Sean Busby, professional snowboarder and person with type 1 diabetes will speak about his friendship with Jesse.

Everyone at the JDRF Western Wisconsin Chapter extends our condolences to the Alswager family – you are all in our thoughts and our hearts during this time.
