Laurie McLeod (Middleton networking group leader) reviewed 504 plans and the need to have plans in place for various accommodations, before they happen (ACT tests, leaving class to test, class trips, bus rides, etc.). Good news: the Madison school district will now be initiating 504 plans for children with Type 1, where in the past this has sometimes been a struggle for parents. If you’d like a copy of Laurie’s comprehensive 504 plan, please email her at lemcleod1@yahoo.com as she will generously share her copy or answer any of your questions. Remember: schools are obligated to follow through with 504 plans if they accepted federal funding or risk losing that funding.

Beth and Laurie did a super job of presenting these school-related issues, and we thank them from the bottom of our hearts! The conference room was full, which attests to the continual interest in these important topics.

Thanks to our loyal sitters for assisting once again: Sylvia, Kerry, Dana and Kara!

Take time to relax and enjoy the remainder of the summer! And take care, until we meet again, (August 24th)

FIRST ANNUAL PRTV CHARITY BASKETBALL GAME

To celebrate the first anniversary of PRTV, Planet Revels is having a charity basketball game to raise money and awareness for the Western Wisconsin Chapter of the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation. The game will take place Saturday February 6 at 11:00am at Onalaska High School in Onalaska, WI. It will be the La Crosse Spartans and the La Crosse Skating Sirens taking on Team PRTV and La Crosse Radio Group.

Admission is $4.00 for adults and $2.00 for kids. 100% of the proceeds will be going to JDRF. Admission will be free if you bring a non-perishable food item for the Hunger Task Force.

The event will also include contests, prizes, LOTS of crowd interaction, and performances from T.U.G.G. and Abbey Lane. This will be a great opportunity for the whole family to come out and meet some of the communities newest athletes as well as some local musicians and other artists (besides watching what promises to be an entertaining basketball game).

For more information, visit http://www.planet-revels.com/ or call Andrew at 608-385-3795.

JDRF is engaged in the process of generating comments to the NIH in support of their ethical guidelines for the conduct of embryonic stem cell research. The deadline to submit these comments is coming up quickly, on May 26.

A message from JDRF CEO, Alan Lewis:

JDRF is engaged in the process of generating comments to the NIH in support of their ethical guidelines for the conduct of embryonic stem cell research. The deadline to submit these comments is coming up quickly, on May 26.

It is imperative that the NIH receive as many supportive comments as possible. JDRF has prepared comments that our advocates can review and submit. These comments support the NIH’s approach and make recommendations for how we can make even more stem cell lines available for research.

We need you to spread the word to those connected to your chapter, who may not be in our advocacy database, to participate in this critical activity this week. Please pass this message along through as many communications channels as you can.

People can take action in two ways:

Visit our action alert page, review our prepared comments, and access the NIH’s form.

Take action through our new text messaging channel, the Diabetxt Network. Use the available tools on this site to place this widget on your social networking page(s) and provide the necessary information. You can take action, sign-up for our mobile network, and tell your friends all at once!

While we will submit comments from JDRF as an organization, it is critical that JDRF families engage in the process as well. We need to show the NIH that patients and families are appreciative of efforts to expand stem cell research and accelerate our path to a cure!
