Support JDRF through Workplace Giving Campaigns
Posted by Western Wisconsin in Advocacy & Research, Planned Giving, Western Wisconsin JDRF on August 10, 2010

A great way to support JDRF is through your annual Workplace Giving Campaigns. You may be able to designate a small amount of each paycheck, or arrange a single payroll deduction, to support diabetes research. Our chapter participates in the Combined Federal Campaign (CFC) through Community Health Charities, State, Municipal, and Local Government Campaigns, United Way – Donor Choice Campaigns, and Corporate Campaigns.
To find us in your campaign brochures, please look for the “Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation – Western Wisconsin Chapter.” If JDRF is not listed, ask your supervisor if you can write us in or add JDRF to their list of charities.
Sad News
Posted by Western Wisconsin in Western Wisconsin JDRF on August 9, 2010
It is with great sadness that we share the news that Dr. Todd Varness passed away on Monday, August 2, following a courageous battle with cancer.
Todd was a pediatric endocrinologist at the American Family Children’s Hospital in Madison and cared for many of our JDRF families.
Todd was also the medical director for the American Diabetes Association Camp Lakota in Rosholt, WI.
Text of the obituary from the Wisconsin State Journal can be found at http://madison.com/obit/154213.
La Crosse Ride to Cure Diabetes – Volunteer Opportunities
Posted by Western Wisconsin in Events, Ride to Cure Diabetes, Western Wisconsin JDRF on August 5, 2010
August 12-14 There has been much excitement about the Ride to Cure Diabetes coming to La Crosse. If you or others in your family are interested in volunteering, please contact Shari Liebe, volunteer coordinator, at liebe@tds.net or 608-235-8818.
She will need to know the days and times that you’re available, assignment preferences, and names/ages of the volunteers. If you are bringing small children with you, we recommend volunteering at the start/finish line. Some of the volunteer opportunities include:
- Rider goody bag distribution on Friday afternoon
- Work at one of the rest stops on Saturday
- Cheer on Riders at the start/finish line on Saturday
- Assist in bike room/SAG support (must have first aid and bicycle maintenance experience, appropriate vehicle with bike rack)
Please note that all Ride volunteers are responsible for their own transportation, lodging, and meals.
Borders Bookstores holding Benefit Days Event to benefit JDRF
Posted by Western Wisconsin in Western Wisconsin JDRF on August 4, 2010
Borders Bookstores will be holding a Benefit Days Event to benefit the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (www.jdrf.org) this weekend, August 6, 7 and 8 in Madison.
In addition to donating a percentage of net sales at all Borders Bookstores in Madison, however, they have also provided an online promotion code and a percentage of all sales online using that code will be donated to JDRF.
If you’re a book lover, here’s a way to get those books you’ve been wanting and benefit a great organization at the same time. The benefit promotion coupons/code also apply to CDs and many other products at Borders, and can be combined with any other promotions and offers — if you’re a Borders book club member, you can use those wonderful percentage off coupons they send you regularly

July Network Group Meeting Notes

Beth VandenLangenberg (Pediatric Nurse Practitioner at UW Hospital) provided information, articles and forms on the medical side of back-to-school issues, as well as answered many questions. She distributed the newly-revised “Resource Guide for Wisconsin Schools and Families” and pointed out the Quick Tips section. Here’s the link for the electronic version: http://www.dhs.wisconsin.gov/health/diabetes/srg.HTM
Laurie McLeod (Middleton networking group leader) reviewed 504 plans and the need to have plans in place for various accommodations, before they happen (ACT tests, leaving class to test, class trips, bus rides, etc.). Good news: the Madison school district will now be initiating 504 plans for children with Type 1, where in the past this has sometimes been a struggle for parents. If you’d like a copy of Laurie’s comprehensive 504 plan, please email her at lemcleod1@yahoo.com as she will generously share her copy or answer any of your questions. Remember: schools are obligated to follow through with 504 plans if they accepted federal funding or risk losing that funding.

Beth and Laurie did a super job of presenting these school-related issues, and we thank them from the bottom of our hearts! The conference room was full, which attests to the continual interest in these important topics.
Thanks to our loyal sitters for assisting once again: Sylvia, Kerry, Dana and Kara!
Take time to relax and enjoy the remainder of the summer! And take care, until we meet again, (August 24th)
Eileen
