I WOULD LOVE YOUR FEEDBACK:

1. Are you still interested in a food presentation with a dietitian type meeting? yes or no

2. Why didn’t you sign up for December’s meeting? Was it the type of event, date conflict, cost or other?

3. Are you still interested in meeting on a quarterly basis with other T1′s?

Naomi Wedel, CDE and Clinical Specialist from Roche, presented information on their new pump and test strips, as well as tools to tighten the individual glucose range. Discussion followed on hand sanitizers and alcohol swabs – they don’t clean, they just kill bacteria. Cleaning wipes are better as they contain more water. Be careful: lotions make the readings lower. The highest readings from fruit come from grapes as the sugar residue increases the glucose numbers. You might also be careful of orange residue, cinnamon roll residue, etc. and be sure to clean the hands before testing – the old fashioned way, with soap and water. Naomi also provided some promised links:

• Student Guide from WI Diabetes Prevention and Control Group: http://www.dhs.wisconsin.gov/health/diabetes/srg.HTM
• Diabetes Behavior Institute Etiquette For Parents: http://behavioraldiabetesinstitute.org/downloads/Teen-Etiquette-for-parents.pdf

Thanks to our sitters, the Mortensen twins, who showed even though the little kids didn’t.

In the meantime, wishing you and yours the happiest of holidays seasons possible!!
Hopefully we’ll see you again and have more time to connect at future meetings.

Joe Brady and Kathy Ziegert gave an excellent presentation on the Ride to Cure and Team Wild projects. Their experiences were truly inspirational and motivating as they described the tenacity and training involved in their accomplishments, let alone all the money they’ve raised for a T1 cure! And it was great to hear Kelly and Jana jumped on the rides for a great cause! I admire these role models and thank them for sharing their time and information with us.

Thanks to our sitters (Kara, Dana and Zach) for coming through in our time of need, to watch and mentor the younger set.

Role models are so very important for our Type 1 teens/kids to prove they can do anything. Both parents and teens/kids are welcome to meet Joe Brady and Kathy Ziegert this month.

• Joe Brady (30 years type 1) is the head cycling coach for the JDRF Western WI Ride to Cure Team, an American Birkiebeiner skier and Wisconsin Ironman finisher.
• Together they’ll present both genders with a look at the importance of exercise in managing Type 1 and living a fulfilling and fun life.
• A question and answer period will follow so start thinking of what you’d like to know.
