Educational DVD Features Local People Sharing Their Story of Diabetes, Hypertension and Chronic Kidney Disease

MADISON, WI (July 1, 2010) – The Wisconsin Lions Foundation, in partnership with the Wisconsin Diabetes Prevention and Control Program and National Kidney Foundation of Wisconsin, will hold a community education program in Madison on July 20 at the Sheraton Madison Hotel, 706 John Nolen Drive. Registration begins at 5:30 p.m. and the event starts at 6:00 p.m. People who have diabetes, high blood pressure, and/or chronic kidney disease, as well as their family members and people interested in learning more about diabetes, high blood pressure or chronic kidney disease are encouraged to attend.

Event attendees will see a premiere showing of the new educational DVD “The Links to Chronic Kidney Disease: Diabetes, High Blood Pressure, and Family History” and receive a free copy to take home. They will also hear from diabetes care experts about diabetes, high blood pressure and chronic kidney disease, meet and hear from local “stars” from the DVD who tell their diabetes story, be able to have their blood pressure checked, and enjoy exhibits and healthy light snacks/refreshments.

Diabetes is the leading cause of chronic kidney disease. “Controlling your high blood pressure and/or diabetes can help prevent and or delay the progression of chronic kidney disease,” says Leah Ludlum, RN, BSN, CDE, director of the Wisconsin Diabetes Prevention and Control Program.

Gena Van Kirk, RD, CDE and Territory Manager for Animas, was our guest speaker. Gena discussed the waterproof Ping pump and meter (pings information back and forth), with the pump being available in 5 colors. Animas is working toward supplying a line of pumps to fit different patient needs. Their artificial pancreas project is 4-5 years out for the first generation, prior to FDA approval. View their website: http://www.animas.com/ which contains lots of information along with a reminder to pay attention to all pump warnings, as well as to disconnect PRIOR to rewinding, loading or priming. Feel free to contact Gena at 608-397-7756 or gvankirk@its.jnj.com if you have questions or concerns.

I want to thank you all for the many questions at this meeting. That’s how we all learn more, to keep the discussion of new information flowing. What one doesn’t think of, another will, or we can build on the last question asked. And the speakers do enjoy and appreciate the questions, so they don’t have to just present what they feel may be “dry” material.

Thanks once again to our faithful sitters, who make it possible for more parents to attend!

Please note the annual JDRF meeting tonight is located at the Edgewood west campus, 1255 Deming Way, not on Monroe Street.

Please place July 27 on your calendar for our next meeting, with back to school issues, forms and 504 plans presented by Beth VandenLangenberg (UW Hospital Pediatric Nurse Practitioner) and Laurie McLeod (Middleton network group leader).

Take care, until we meet again, Eileen

We’ve outgrown our meeting place in the JDRF office building, and am wondering if anyone has any suggestions for a new spot. Many of the larger companies have secured buildings, and they have issues with evening meetings. This may still be a possibility, though, if you know of one that would accommodate us.

Ideally, a building that is centrally located, off the betline and more toward center of town. A facility that has two separate spaces, one for the meeting and one for the babysitting, would be ideal as well. Possibilities might be a church, school, community center, clinic, etc.

Please send all your ideas, and I’ll check into suggestions. If you have connections, all the better.

Thanks so much for your input in this regard.

JDRF Parent Network Meeting
Tuesday, February 23 at 6:30pm
Wisconsin Trade Center, 8401 Greenway Boulevard, Middleton
**change of location this meeting only**

***UPDATED 2/24/10*****
We had a fantastic turnout for the Feb. 23 JDRF parent networking meeting (58 adults)! Tracy Bekx, endocrinologist from American Family Children’s Hospital, provided invaluable information: an overview of DKA and hypoglycemia, how to detect and prevent them, along with sick day guidelines. Many of our parent mentors were in attendance, which new “mentor program” assists the newly-diagnosed families adjust to Type 1. Call the JDRF office if you’re interested in joining the mentor program to provide one-on-one support at a time when it’s so beneficial to our newbies.

The grief counselor for the meeting cancelled due to personal illness. Keep in mind that your Employee Assistance Program or insurance carrier can help with fears and feelings about handling Type 1 and its complications. And these fourth-Tuesday-of-the-month meetings relay tons of information to help each other through our daily lives with Type 1.

Once again, thanks to all our teen sitters who stepped forward to make this meeting happen!

Thanks everyone for coming … looking forward to seeing you on March 23!

Bring your questions and we’ll see you soon!

Directions to the Wisconsin Trade Center Building & JDRF meeting location:

Take the beltline to Middleton and take the Greenway Boulevard exit. Head west toward the tall office buildings and Greenway Station shopping area. Go past Deming Way, drive under the glass overhead walkway, take the first left into the parking lot, and enter the building at the gold awning door.

Rothschild conference room will be to the left, before you get to the glass walkway. The childcare will be in the JP Morgan room. There’s a coat room and bathrooms right outside the conference rooms. Be sure to sign in so we can place you on the email list for meeting notices. WTC conf rooms directions
