JDRF Parent Network Meeting

We had a fantastic turnout for the Feb. 23 JDRF parent networking meeting (58 adults)! Tracy Bekx, endocrinologist from American Family Children’s Hospital, provided invaluable information: an overview of DKA and hypoglycemia, how to detect and prevent them, along with sick day guidelines. Many of our parent mentors were in attendance, which new “mentor program” assists the newly-diagnosed families adjust to Type 1. Call the JDRF office if you’re interested in joining the mentor program to provide one-on-one support at a time when it’s so beneficial to our newbies.
The grief counselor for the meeting cancelled due to personal illness. Keep in mind that your Employee Assistance Program or insurance carrier can help with fears and feelings about handling Type 1 and its complications. And these fourth-Tuesday-of-the-month meetings relay tons of information to help each other through our daily lives with Type 1.
Once again, thanks to all our teen sitters who stepped forward to make this meeting happen!

The recent death of a teenager from complications of type 1 diabetes has resulted in much anxiety, fear, sorrow and concern among parents in our community. At this special meeting, a pediatric endocrinologist will review diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA) and how to recognize and treat this condition, why to check ketones, treatment for extreme low blood sugar and emergency glucagon usage, and sick day guidelines. We will also have a HospiceCare grief counselor facilitate discussion on thoughts and feelings related to this tragedy, and to find support from others who are sharing similar experiences. Take the beltline to Middleton and take the Greenway Boulevard exit. Head west toward the tall office buildings and Greenway Station shopping area. Go past Deming Way, drive under the glass overhead walkway, take the first left into the parking lot, and enter the building at the gold awning door.
Rothschild conference room will be to the left, before you get to the glass walkway. The childcare will be in the JP Morgan room. There’s a coat room and bathrooms right outside the conference rooms. Assemble a Family Basket for the Spring Gala

Creating a family basket is a wonderful way for everyone in the Western Wisconsin Chapter to participate in the Spring Gala. Last year, these beautiful and creative baskets raised more than $5,000 for diabetes research. Nothing is more touching than seeing what family and friends put together in honor of their loved ones living with type 1 diabetes. Join us Wednesday, March 3, 2010 at the Hedberg Public Library Meeting Room – Lower Level. (Right across from the snack shop.) 316 S Main St, Janesville, WI
This meeting the topics are going to be mainly for the parents. Kids are welcome in the library when they are 8 and older. If they are under 8 they need to be with someone 12 or over. There are computer games, movies, books, games to check out. Lots of fun in the Children’s Department.

It’s a Family Affair

All runners and walkers are invited to join the Western Wisconsin Chapter and be part of the Crazy Legs Classic. Starting at Capitol Square and finishing at Camp Randall Stadium, you can participate in either the five mile run or two mile walk. Would you like to help others going through the same thing?
BECOME A JDRF MENTOR!
JDRF’s Mentor Program is about sharing, helping, listening, and new friendships with people who understand the ever-changing demands of living with type 1 diabetes. As a mentor, you would be responsible for contacting a newly diagnosed family or adult and sharing your personal experience, answering non-medical questions, and most importantly, lending valuable, specialized support when it’s needed most.
Please join us for one of our training sessions led by Jeanne Grist, Mentor Chair and Amy Eager, Outreach Chair.

Our guest speaker will be Beth Vanden Langenberg, Pediatric Nurse Practitioner, American Family Children’s Hospital. She’ll cover back to school issues, Type 1 kids’ rights, accommodations, and recommended documents. She plans on bringing blank school orders again and working with families to fill them out, as she did last year. Also, Beth possesses a wealth of knowledge and can answer our many questions.

Design your own JDRF Funny Car contest

All children with type 1 diabetes are encouraged to submit a completed entry for the Ford Design Your Own Funny Car Contest. The Western Wisconsin chapter will receive a $1,000 donation if ten submissions are received from our area. This is also a great opportunity for fundraising for your Walk to Cure Diabetes family team.

JDRF Funny Car Design Contest
Ford Customer Service Division and NHRA driver Bob Tasca II are offering one lucky JDRF child the creative chance of a lifetime—to design his or her own Motorcraft/Quick Lane/FORD Shelby Mustang NITRO funny car to be used in an actual race!
Starting June 1 through June 30, 2009, JDRF kids (with juvenile diabetes) can submit their own Funny Car design using the attached two documents (race car body and hood). All eligible design entries must be mailed to Ford, postmarked by Tuesday, June 30, 2009. (Please note that original entries will not be returned.)
All entries will be submitted into the Design Your Own JDRF Funny Car online design contest found at www.jdrf.org/ford. Family, friends and all visitors will be encouraged to make
donations in support of their favorite design. The top five designs receiving the highest bid totals will be provided to Ford to select the final winner!
