Kids Walk to Cure Diabetes

The Western Wisconsin Chapter is looking for schools interested in hosting a Kids Walk to Cure Diabetes this spring, an educational school fundraising program that raises money to find a cure for type 1 diabetes.

While raising money for JDRF, students learn about diabetes and the importance of making healthy choices. The money raised through this program helps fund type 1 diabetes research and provides additional dollars for your school to use on equipment, field trips, books or whatever your school needs!

The Western Wisconsin JDRF Walk awards celebration is being held at Capital City Harley Davidson (the same place as last year).

Madison and La Crosse Walks a Huge Success!

Congratulations and thank you to everyone who participated in this year’s Walk to Cure Diabetes in Madison on Sunday, September 18 and in La Crosse on Sunday, October 2. Despite some soggy weather, the Madison Walk had more than 1,500 walkers, and while funds are still being collected and tabulated (we’re currently at $340,000), we are optimistic that we’ll reach our goal of $433,000. The La Crosse Walk has already surpassed last year’s total by raising more than $38,000. Please save the date of Thursday, November 30 for our Walk Awards Celebration at Capital City Harley-Davidson in Madison; invitations will be mailed shortly.

TrialNet Screening at Walk to Cure Diabetes

The Type 1 Diabetes TrialNet Group, based at the University of Minnesota, will be at the Madison Walk to Cure Diabetes on September 18.

The TrialNet Natural History Study is screening relatives of people with type 1 diabetes. Researchers are conducting this study to understand more about the development of type 1 diabetes and look at ways to delay or prevent the disease.

Through a blood test, doctors can determine if an individual may be at risk for diabetes.

Screening will be available at the Walk and is open to family members of people with type 1 diabetes – parents, children, brothers and sisters as well as cousins, nieces and nephews. Numbing lotion will be available to anyone who is uncomfortable with blood draws.

If you would like to be involved with research, come get screened at the Walk!

Hy-Vee Sneaker Sales Campaign

For eight weeks, the Madison Hy-Vee store will ask customers to help raise money for diabetes research. Hy-Vee customers can donate $1 to have a JDRF paper sneaker with their name displayed in the store. Hy-Vee has supported the JDRF Sneaker Sale campaign since 1998. Please spread the word to all your family and friends to stop by Hy-Vee to purchase a sneaker – all those single sneakers add up to big research dollars for diabetes!
