This October, Michelle Reddington will be riding 105 miles in the JDRF Ride to Cure in Death Valley in honor of Jesse Alswager who tragically lost his life two years ago at the age of 13 to sudden complications with his type 1 diabetes.

Join us in raising money to help find a cure by tasting and stocking up on your summer wine stock at Sip for a Cure! No cover, just come and taste and buy wine!

Dan Hurley featured Speaker at JDRF Annual Meeting

Dan Hurley, award-winning medical journalist and nationally recognized diabetes author, will be the featured speaker at the Western Wisconsin Chapter’s Annual Meeting. A type 1 diabetic for more than 30 years, Hurley is the author of Diabetes Rising: How a Rare Disease Became a Modern Pandemic, and What to Do About It.

The Annual Meeting will also include the chapter’s Board election, acknowledgment of retiring Board members, Chapter update and special recognition awards. The event is free and open to all JDRF supporters. RSVP to the JDRF office by Wednesday, June 13 to 608-833-2873 or westernwi@jdrf.org.

JDRF Office Volunteers Needed!

Do you have 2-3 hours per week to assist the office with gift data entry? We are looking for volunteers to help us with Ride and Walk data entry this summer and early fall. JDRF will provide the necessary training and we are flexible with scheduling during regular office hours. Additionally, we are seeking volunteers to help periodically with mailings, assembling Bag of Hope folders, counting Kids Walk funds and other event tasks. Rockford Area Support Group

A new type 1 diabetes family support group is forming in the Rockford area. The first meeting will be held on Thursday, May 17 from 6:30 – 7:30 PM. The group will meet at the YMCA – Northeast Branch location 8451 Orth Road in Loves Park, IL. Meetings will be held on the 3rd Thursday of every month. Spring Gala A Huge Success!
Thanks to the hard work and generosity of our donors, sponsors, committee, and volunteers, we are thrilled to announce that more than $430,000 was raised at the “Big Dreams” Spring Gala on Saturday, April 14, at Monona Terrace in Madison. This year’s event honored the Sub-Zero Foundation for their extraordinary support of JDRF. With nearly 600 guests in attendance, the evening raised a record-breaking amount for diabetes research.

Network Group meeting notes (4/24/12)

Thanks for coming out and spending Tuesday evening to learn and network together!

Jon Nordenberg, Attorney and JDRF National Lay Review Committee member, gave a great presentation. He discussed the many ways JDRF is funding research in the areas of prevention, improved treatment, and eventually the cure.

The Artificial Pancreas Project makes use of the insulin pump, the CGM sensor, and the control software to tie the two together for better control with less daily burden. The first generation device has been successful for in-hospital trials. Outpatient trials are next, with major work being done at the University of Virginia, as well as University of California, Santa Barbara. The first generation artificial pancreas is expected to be approved in 3-5 years.

The second generation will consist of improving sensors and using faster insulin and delivery systems. The third generation will use dual chambered pumps (nonexistent now) along with multi-hormones (Amylin and Glucagon).

Meanwhile, everyone is encouraged to support JDRF and become an advocate on the JDRF website to influence legislation and funding for research and the cure.

Special Events Intern position available

Internship Description
The Special Events Intern will assist staff and volunteers in the overall planning of the major fundraising events (Spring Gala, Walk to Cure Diabetes and Ride to Cure Diabetes).
Responsibilities include:
 Assisting with event committee meetings
 Participating in auction item solicitation
 Assisting with website content, social media, and email marketing
 Writing and submitting media calendar placements
 Following up on event logistics, such as venue, menus, decorations and entertainment
 Working with staff on print materials
 Helping track event participation
 Being on site for all events and assisting with post‐event follow‐up
